The Platform and Mobile Enterprise Group

The Platform and Mobile Enterprise group is looking for a summer intern interested in working on Platform as a Service (PaaS) systems at the IBM Research - Almaden Research in San Jose, CA. Our group’s research focuses on bringing enterprise features such as quality management, advanced persistence, etc. to Cloud and Mobile platforms and applications. This particular internship looks at approaches and patterns for persistent applications on the Cloud Foundry PaaS.

We are looking for candidates with a background or interest in distributed systems, in particular persistence of PaaS applications. The work takes place in a small team and includes investigation and original as well as proof of concept development (e.g. on IBM’s Bluemix PaaS system) with the goal of submitting the work to a top journal or conference.

Candidates pursuing a Master’s or a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related area are preferred.


Bachelor’s degree
Background in distributed systems
Experience in programming
English: Fluent


Basic knowledge and experience in systems programming (OS, networking, distributed systems)
Familiarity with Ruby or Go programming
Familiarity with pair programming, Test Driven Development and collaboration tools (Git, CVS...)
Experience with open source databases such as Maria DB or no-sql DBs
