History of the Department

The undergraduate program was initiated in August 1982. Initially it was called the Urban Systems Engineering program. It was designed to provide students with knowledge and training in the broad field of computer science and on the application of systems engineering and operations research techniques to solve large-scale problems in the public sector. The department name later changed to Systems and Computer Science. In 2014, the name later change to Computer Science.

The School of Engineering

Engineering education has existed at Howard University since 1907 when, under the auspices of the School of Manual Arts and Sciences, two-year programs were offered in electrical, civil and mechanical engineering. By 1911, a four-year curriculum leading to the bachelor's degree was established and a separate building was constructed and equipped to house the School. Continuing program development and an increased demand for trained engineers led to the establishment of the School of Engineering and Architecture in 1934. The present-day School of Engineering was officially established in 1970 when Architecture and Engineering became separate schools.

The College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Science

The College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Sciences was created by the August 1997 merger of the School of Architecture and Planning and the School of Engineering. In the course of the merger, the names of the schools were changed to the School of Architecture and Design and the School of Engineering and Computer Sciences.

Howard University is a member of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area which includes George Mason, Georgetown, George Washington, Catholic, American, and Gallaudet Universities; Mount Vernon, Marymount, and Trinity Colleges; the University of the District of Columbia and the University of Maryland, College Park.
